Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood Releases India's Top 10 Zero-Emission Trucking Corridors Report on 9 May 2025 to Boost Clean Freight Movement and Support PM E-DRIVE Scheme

On 9th May 2025, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, unveiled a pivotal report, India’s Priority Corridors for Zero-Emission Trucking. This report highlights ten critical highway corridors across India, identified for their high potential in adopting Zero-Emission Trucks (ZETs). The initiative aims to drive sustainable freight movement, aligning with India’s environmental and economic objectives, making it a key topic for competitive exam aspirants.

Collaboration and Expertise

Key Partners and Contributors

The report was crafted with support from the Centre of Excellence for Zero Emission Trucking (CoEZET) at IIT Madras, Rocky Mountain Institute, and pManifold. Akshima Ghate, Managing Director of Rocky Mountain Institute, presented the findings. The launch event was attended by notable figures, including Dr. Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary; Dr. Karthick Athmanathan, PSA Fellow; Dr. Preeti Banzal and Dr. Rakesh Kaur, Advisers, Office of PSA; and Prof. Shankar Ram from CoEZET, IIT Madras.

Corridor Selection Process

Rigorous Three-Phase Methodology

The top ten corridors were selected through a comprehensive three-phase process:

  • Initial Assessment: Evaluated 230 corridors using toll traffic data and supply/demand centre mapping.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Consultations with industry and government experts refined the selection.
  • Field Research: On-ground studies considered freight traffic, industrial activity, grid infrastructure, battery range, and commercial viability.

Why Zero-Emission Trucking Matters

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Long-distance trucks contribute nearly 40% of India’s fuel consumption and transport emissions. Adopting ZETs is vital for decarbonizing logistics, reducing air pollution, and enhancing energy security. The prioritized corridors lay the foundation for a national ZET infrastructure, supporting India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and fostering economic competitiveness.

Policy and Investment Guidance

Strategic Roadmap for Stakeholders

The report provides actionable insights for investments in charging infrastructure, public-private partnerships, and regulatory frameworks. It complements the PM E-DRIVE scheme, launched in 2024 by the Ministry of Heavy Industries with ₹500 crore to promote zero-emission transport. This makes it a crucial reference for policymakers, industry leaders, and exam candidates studying sustainable development policies.
