India Launches Measured Response Under Operation SINDOOR After Pakistani Drone and Missile Attacks on Military Targets Neutralised by Air Defence Systems

During a press briefing on Operation SINDOOR on May 07, 2025, India described its response to recent cross-border tensions as focused, measured, and non-escalatory. This development, critical for competitive exam aspirants, highlights India’s strategic restraint and robust defence capabilities amid escalating tensions with Pakistan.

India’s Initial Response

Non-Escalatory Approach

India emphasized that its response under Operation SINDOOR deliberately avoided targeting Pakistani military establishments. The Indian Armed Forces reiterated that any attack on Indian military targets would invite a suitable and proportionate response, maintaining a stance of restraint to prevent escalation.

Pakistan’s Attacks on Indian Targets

Drone and Missile Assault

On the night of May 07-08, 2025, Pakistan attempted to strike multiple military targets across Northern and Western India, including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. These attacks were effectively neutralized by India’s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems, with debris recovered from various locations confirming Pakistan’s actions.

India’s Counter-Response

Targeted Strikes on Air Defence Systems

On the morning of May 08, 2025, the Indian Armed Forces conducted targeted strikes on air defence radars and systems at multiple locations in Pakistan, including neutralizing an air defence system in Lahore. India’s response was calibrated to match the domain and intensity of Pakistan’s attacks, adhering to a policy of proportionality.

Escalation Along the Line of Control

Pakistan’s Artillery and Mortar Attacks

Pakistan intensified unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC) using mortars and heavy-calibre artillery in the Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. These attacks resulted in the tragic loss of sixteen civilian lives, including three women and five children.

India’s Defensive Response

Compelled to act, India responded with counter-fire to halt Pakistan’s mortar and artillery barrage, aiming to protect civilian lives and restore calm along the LoC.

India’s Commitment to Peace

Non-Escalation Policy

The Indian Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to non-escalation, provided Pakistan respects this approach. India’s actions reflect a balance between defending national security and preventing a broader conflict, emphasizing diplomacy and restraint.
