On May 15, 2025, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, inaugurated the Administrative-cum-Academic Block of the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry at Jalukie, Nagaland, under the Central Agricultural University (Imphal). During the inauguration, Shri Chouhan announced a substantial financial assistance of Rs 338.83 crore to support the overall growth and development of Nagaland’s agriculture sector. He urged the Nagaland government to formulate a comprehensive action plan to promote agriculture and rural development, assuring full support from the Central Government. This initiative aims to strengthen the state’s economy through sustainable agricultural practices and innovation.
Focus on Natural Farming
The Union Minister emphasized the potential of natural farming in Nagaland, highlighting its role in promoting sustainable agriculture. He assured the state of the Central Government’s support in adopting eco-friendly farming techniques to enhance productivity while preserving the environment.
Strengthening Grassroots Engagement
Shri Chouhan advised Nagaland government officials to establish a core scientific team comprising scientists, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) officials, university professionals, and farmers in each district. These teams would engage with farmers at the village level at least twice a month to identify challenges and develop policy interventions and technological solutions. This approach aims to bridge the gap between research and practical application, fostering agricultural innovation.
Support for Students and Entrepreneurs
The Union Minister praised the efforts of the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry and invited its students to Delhi to share their innovative ideas. He promised comprehensive support for start-up and entrepreneurship development, including financial assistance, to empower students to contribute to the agri-tech and livestock sectors. He also expressed his intent to revisit Nagaland to engage further with farmers and students.
Farmers’ Fair and Community Engagement
During the event, Shri Chouhan visited the Farmers’ Fair and exhibition stalls, interacting with 639 farmers and 84 officials from the state and central government. This engagement highlighted the importance of community involvement in driving agricultural progress and fostering collaboration between stakeholders.
Role of Central Agricultural University
Governor of Nagaland, Shri La. Ganesan, who presided over the function, commended the Central Agricultural University, Imphal, and the College of Veterinary Sciences for their contributions to animal healthcare and agricultural improvement. He emphasized the need for a scientific approach and collaboration among farmers and stakeholders to achieve the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
