Union Home Minister Amit Shah Launches Revamped OCI Portal with Enhanced Features, User-Friendly Interface, and Advanced Cybersecurity

On May 19, 2025, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, launched the revamped Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Portal in New Delhi. The event, attended by the Union Home Secretary, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, and senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, marked a significant step towards enhancing world-class immigration facilities for over 5 million OCI cardholders.

A User-Friendly Digital Platform

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is committed to providing seamless services for its diaspora. The new OCI Portal, accessible at ociservices.gov.in, introduces an updated user interface to simplify the registration process for Overseas Citizens of India. Shri Amit Shah emphasized the importance of ensuring no inconvenience for Indian-origin citizens visiting or staying in India, reflecting the government’s focus on Digital India.

The revamped OCI Portal addresses limitations of the previous system, developed in 2013, by incorporating feedback from cardholders and leveraging technological advancements. It processes around 2,000 applications daily across 180 Indian missions and 12 Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRROs). Key user-friendly features include:

  • User sign-up and categorized registration menus.
  • Auto-fill of user profile details in forms.
  • Dashboard for tracking completed and partially filled applications.
  • Online payment gateway for FRRO filings.

Significance of the OCI Scheme

Connecting the Indian Diaspora

Introduced in 2005 through an amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955, the OCI scheme allows registration for Persons of Indian Origin who were citizens of India on or after January 26, 1950, or were eligible to become citizens on that date. However, individuals with ties to Pakistan or Bangladesh are ineligible. The revamped portal enhances the experience for the global Indian diaspora, fostering stronger connections with India.
