In a historic and spiritually significant moment, the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha arrived today in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, marking the beginning of a profound cultural and religious journey as part of the United Nations Day of Vesak 2025 celebrations being held from 6 to 8 May.
The relics are accompanied by Union Minister of Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, Andhra Pradesh Minister of Tourism and Culture, Shri Kandula Durgesh, revered monks, and senior Indian officials.
Ceremonial Welcome in Ho Chi Minh City
The delegation was formally received by:
- Dao Ngoc Dung, Minister of Religious and Ethnic Affairs, Vietnam
- Duong Ngoc Hai, Vice-Chairman, Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee
- Supreme Patriarch Thích Trí Quảng and senior monks of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha
On arrival, ceremonial prayers were held at the airport, followed by the enshrinement of the Holy Relics at the Thanh Tam Monastery.
A sapling of the Sacred Bodhi Tree, brought from India, was planted at the Vietnam Buddhist University by the Indian Minister and the Supreme Patriarch of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.
The Holy Relics will remain in Ho Chi Minh City until 7 May 2025, and then travel to Tay Ninh, Ha Noi, and Ha Nam provinces until 21 May 2025.
A Journey of Faith and Cultural Heritage
The Holy Relics, which originate from Sarnath, where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon, are visiting Vietnam for the first time.
This sacred visit is supported by:
- Mahabodhi Society of India
- National Museum, Government of India
- International Buddha Confederation
The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and the Government of Vietnam are providing local support for the journey.
Exhibition and Cultural Performances
To celebrate the deep-rooted India-Vietnam spiritual connection:
- A special exhibition on India-Vietnam Buddhist links over 2,000 years will be held at the Vietnam Buddhist University.
- An Indian cultural troupe will perform a dance-drama titled “The Journey of Gautama Buddha” in multiple cities from 5 to 13 May 2025.
Strengthening India-Vietnam Relations
The Government of India hopes this spiritual and cultural exchange will further deepen the time-tested bonds between the people of India and Vietnam.
