Operation Olivia 2025: Indian Coast Guard Protects Record 6.98 Lakh Olive Ridley Turtles on Odisha Coast

In a significant achievement for marine conservation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully protected over 6.98 lakh Olive Ridley turtles during their mass nesting at the Rushikulya river mouth in Odisha in February 2025. The annual Operation Olivia, conducted from November to May, focuses on safeguarding these endangered turtles along Odisha’s coastline, particularly at Gahirmatha Beach, a critical nesting site hosting over eight lakh turtles annually.

A Robust Conservation Strategy

Surveillance and Enforcement

Operation Olivia employs a multi-pronged approach to protect Olive Ridley turtles. The ICG has conducted over 5,387 surface patrol sorties and 1,768 aerial surveillance missions since the operation’s inception. These efforts have significantly reduced threats like illegal fishing and habitat disruption. In a strong enforcement action, the ICG detained 366 boats involved in illegal fishing, ensuring safer nesting grounds for the turtles.

Community Engagement and Sustainable Practices

Collaborating for Conservation

Beyond surveillance, the ICG has actively engaged local fishing communities to promote sustainable fishing practices. By advocating the use of Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs), the ICG minimizes harm to turtles caught in fishing nets. Additionally, partnerships with NGOs through formal MoUs have strengthened conservation education, fostering a community-driven approach to protect Odisha’s marine biodiversity.

Significance of Olive Ridley Conservation

Preserving an Endangered Species

The Olive Ridley turtle, listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, relies on Odisha’s coast for its annual mass nesting, known as arribada. The record protection of 6.98 lakh turtles in February 2025 underscores the ICG’s commitment to marine ecosystem preservation. This initiative not only safeguards an endangered species but also supports ecological balance in the region.
