C-DOT Signs MoU with Synergy Quantum to Develop Drone-Based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Systems, Advancing India’s Atmanirbhar Push in Quantum-Secure Telecom Technologies

On May 12, 2025, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a leading telecom R&D institution under the Department of Telecommunications, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Synergy Quantum India Private Limited. This collaboration aims to advance India’s capabilities in quantum-secure communication, focusing on the development of drone-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems, reinforcing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Objectives of the Partnership

Developing Drone-Based QKD Systems

The MoU formalizes cooperation to develop drone-based QKD systems using the decoy-based BB84 protocol with polarization encoding, targeting a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 or higher. This technology ensures secure data transmission, critical for applications in defence, emergency response, and government communication. The partnership will also involve co-creating research proposals for national and international grants and sharing outcomes through publications, white papers, and expert talks.

Fostering Innovation and Knowledge Exchange

C-DOT and Synergy Quantum will organize symposia, conferences, and short courses to promote research in quantum technologies. This collaboration combines C-DOT’s research expertise with Synergy Quantum’s industry agility, aiming to position India as a global leader in quantum communication.

Leadership Perspectives

Vision for a Secure Digital Future

Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in shaping a secure and self-reliant digital future. He stated, “Quantum technologies hold immense promise for next-generation secure communications, and this collaboration reflects our shared vision of accelerating indigenous capabilities.” Mr. Jay Oberoi, Founder & CEO of Synergy Quantum, expressed optimism, noting that the partnership could establish India as a pioneer in drone-based quantum secure communications.

Key Attendees

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, Dr. Pankaj Dalela, and Ms. Shikha Srivastava from C-DOT, along with Mr. Jai Oberoi, Mr. Ajay Singh, Dr. Vipin Rathi, and AM G S Bedi from Synergy Quantum, underscoring the significance of this collaboration.

Key Facts About Quantum Communication

What is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)?

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a secure communication method that uses principles of quantum mechanics to distribute encryption keys. The BB84 protocol, developed by Charles Bennett and Gilles Brassard, is a widely used QKD protocol that ensures security by detecting eavesdropping attempts. QKD systems are vital for protecting sensitive data in sectors like defence, finance, and government.

Significance of Drone-Based QKD

Deploying QKD systems on drones enhances flexibility and scalability, enabling secure communication in remote or challenging environments. This technology supports India’s goal of developing quantum-safe telecom infrastructure, safeguarding critical systems against future cyber threats. The collaboration aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, promoting indigenous innovation in emerging technologies.
